Henry Edwards Huntington (1850-1927), founder of the Huntington Library, was born in Oneonta, New York. In 1892 he went to San Francisco to work for his uncle, Collis Potter Huntington, who was President of the Southern Pacific Railway Company. William Hertrich was born in Baden, Germany, and studied horticulture in Austria. By 1904 he was in California, where he began to work on the San Marino Ranch purchased by Henry Edwards Huntington the previous year. Hertrich progressed from gardener to superintendent of grounds and buildings and retired in 1948.
